Renault 5 E-Tech Electric Gains More Range and Tech in 2027 Update

The Renault 5 has been updated for the 2027 model year, with the electric supermini benefitting from new software and hardware. Aerodynamic efficiency has been improved thanks to revised lower body panels and new wing mirrors. It’ll take a keen eye to tell the reshaped units, but a close look reveals an angled teardrop design with the LED indicators part of the mirror caps rather than sitting on the support arm.

Improved battery electronics increase the maximum WLTP range for all variants, with the 40kWh Urban Range unit offering up to 197 miles between charges, while the 52kWh Comfort Range models claim up to 259 miles. These represent increases of five and seven miles respectively.

A new driving mode makes its debut on the MY27 R5, with SmartMode intelligently switching between the car’s Eco, Comfort and Sport settings. When selected, the car can quickly engage Sport mode when overtaking, maintain Comfort when cruising, and drop down to Eco mode when slowing to urban speeds. While paddles to adjust energy recovery remain on all bar the entry–level Evolution model, the steering wheel-mounted button to quickly flick through the powertrain settings has been removed, meaning drivers will have to use the touchscreen to set their driving mode.

Google’s Gemini AI voice assistant will be available as an over-the-air update to the OpenR infotainment system, bringing enhanced speech recognition, allowing for more complex questions to be posed to it, and the ability to keep up when the language changes mid–sentence. Elsewhere, a new 25W wireless charger features magnets and ventilation to keep smartphones in place and cool while charging, the eCall emergency contact system gains 5G compatibility, and Iconic Five+ models switch the two–tone black and yellow fabric upholstery for black and blue.

Two new exterior colours – Flame Red and Shadow Grey – join the colour palette, and new roof stickers are optionally available. Even with the upgraded hardware and software, there’s been no price increase for the 2027MY Renault 5 EV.

As such, the range continues to start from £21,495 for the R5 Evolution, and £23,495 for the Techno+ with the bigger battery. All models are eligible for Electric Car Grant support from the UK government, and the order books are open now.
