Rocketeer has finally brought its naturally aspirated V6 formula to the third-generation MX-5.

Doing so was a bigger undertaking than simply repeating the NA and NB formula. The NC was effectively a clean-sheet car, with a new structure, revised dimensions and a multi-link rear axle replacing the earlier cars’ double-wishbone arrangement.

Central to the conversion is a post-2003 AJ30 3.0-litre V6, which develops 300bhp and 265lb ft once Rocketeer has fettled it. Mazda rated the original 2.0-litre NC at 158bhp and 139lb ft, so the conversion gets close to doubling the car’s output while retaining naturally aspirated response and delivery.

Getting the V6 into the NC required bespoke work to the cylinder head, allowing it to fit without alterations to the bulkhead, while the subframe and underlying structure also remain unchanged. The rest of the package includes a carbon-fibre engine plenum, new exhaust system, throttle body, clutch and flywheel. All in, the NC has taken 18 months to develop and refine.

One of the defining advantages of the earlier conversion was that the aluminium AJ30 was actually lighter than Mazda’s iron-block four-cylinder. The NC removes that free lunch: its 2.0-litre MZR uses an aluminium block, leaving the V6 slightly heavier this time around. Rocketeer nevertheless says careful positioning preserves both the Mazda’s overall weight and weight distribution.

That complexity means the NC will initially be offered in Turnkey form only, with no self-build kit at launch. Prices start at £25,000 plus VAT – £30,000 including VAT – depending on specification, with builds carried out at Rocketeer’s Hampshire facility or through approved installers in Germany, the USA and Australia.

A decade on from Rocketeer’s founding, the company says more than 180 kits have now been installed worldwide alongside over 30 completed projects. The NC also arrives as work continues on the forthcoming 850kg Keiryo, which takes the same naturally aspirated V6 philosophy in its most extreme direction yet.

The launch car keeps things typically restrained, with gold multi-spoke wheels providing the clearest exterior clue. A yellow rev-counter face echoes the bright yellow cam covers beneath the bonnet.

The NC makes its public debut at this weekend’s Goodwood Revival, alongside the rest of the Rocketeer range.
