Volkswagen has confirmed UK pricing and availability for the hotly anticipated Golf GTI Edition 50, with orders opening at retailers on 15 January. The limited-run anniversary model is priced from £47,995 on-the-road, and is seen by many fans of the marque as a successor to the acclaimed Mk7 GTI Clubsport S.
It’s not hard to see why - like the Clubsport S, the Edition 50 uses the R tune of the evergreen EA888 2.0-litre turbo four, producing 321bhp and 310lb-ft (410Nm) of torque, making it the most powerful GTI to date. Unlike the Clubsport S, which used a six-speed manual, that power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG. The sprint to 62mph takes 5.3 seconds, and VW claims a top speed of 168mph. Another key difference is the GTI Edition 50 retains its rear seats, a conscious decision by VW given the car is now only available in a five door bodyshell. At 1,530kg, kerb weight matches that of the current GTI Clubsport.

That doesn’t mean the Edition 50 has gone soft. Last year racing driver Benny Leuchter set a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 7 minutes 46.13 seconds in June 2025 - the fastest time ever by a production Volkswagen around the circuit. More impressive still, the lap was completed in wet conditions with just a single attempt, meaning there is headroom to go faster still. Leuchter credited the optional Performance Package as the decisive factor in achieving the record.
The Edition 50 sits 15mm lower than the standard GTI and gains a Nürburgring drive mode specifically calibrated for track work. Additional gearbox modes include S+ for optimised downshifts and M+ which limits automatic upshifts even at high revs. Adaptive chassis control is standard, as is VW’s electronic front differential.
The Performance Package adds semi-slick tyres, forged 19-inch Warmenau wheels in black, a twin-exit Akrapovič exhaust system, and further suspension lowering. Weight reduction is part of the package, though specific figures haven't been detailed at this time.

Volkswagen has revived some historic GTI colours for the Edition 50 that include Pure White with black roof and mirrors, classic Tornado Red or an Edition 50-exclusive Dark Moss green metallic. Red-glazed 19-inch Queenstown alloy wheels are fitted as standard, with GTI 50 badging applied to the roof spoiler, door mirrors, steering wheel and sills. Inside, exclusive seat trim, red pedals and red seatbelts complete the anniversary treatment.
Putting the GTI Edition 50 into context, the standard Golf GTI starts from £41,810, the 300bhp Clubsport commands £44,220, while the Golf R is priced between £46,850-£48,170 depending on specification. The recently departed Honda Civic Type R cost £51,900 before its recent withdrawal from the UK market.
Production is limited to 2026 only, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of GTI. Volkswagen anticipates strong demand given the car's status as a one-year-only model. We’ll take ours in Dark Moss Green Metallic complete with the Performance Package.
