When Land Rover revealed the Defender D7X-R ten months ago, a road-going offspring felt inevitable. The only question was how much of the rally-raid car would make it to the showroom.

Quite a lot, as it turns out. The Defender Dakar swaps the OCTA’s 6D Dynamics suspension for coil springs and Bilstein dampers, while gaining a wider track, increased ride height and 35-inch all-terrain tyres on forged 20-inch wheels.

The rally influence extends to the software. New Dunes and Gravel drive modes are joined by Flight Mode, developed for the D7X-R to detect when the Defender becomes airborne and prepares the driveline for the landing.

Without the air restrictor mandated by Stock-class regulations, the BMW-sourced twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 makes 626bhp and 553lb ft of torque. That places it 236bhp up on the D7X-R, and 93bhp up on the 2027 model year OCTA, which has recently had its wings clipped by Euro 6e-bis emissions regulations.

Land Rover says cooling has also been uprated, although it hasn’t detailed the changes. There’s rather more to go on outside, where extended wheelarches with exposed rivets cover the 35-inch tyres, joined by raised carbonfibre air intakes and a carbonfibre bonnet. Roof-mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof and tailgate blanking plate are also part of the package, along with an enhanced metal front undershield and additional underbody protection.

A range of colours will be offered, led by Dakar Sand with a Yanbu Turquoise roof to echo the race-winning D7X-R. Narvik Black and Alaska White are also highlighted, both available with optional matte protective film.

Inside, the Dakar adopts a 2+2 layout with bespoke front race seats and optional four-point harnesses. Rear stowage is designed to accommodate race helmets, while the loadspace gains dedicated mounting for a spare wheel and air compressor.

Shown as a Design Preview Model at The Quail during Monterey Car Week, the Dakar has been confirmed for limited production. What isn't confirmed is the price, production run, weight or on-road performance. Registrations of interest are already being taken, with reservations due to open in early 2027. Full technical details and specifications will be announced at next year’s Dakar Rally, twelve months on from the D7X-R's first, second and fourth in Stock on its competition debut.
